6 Madhesi parties merge as Rastriya Janata Party
Kathmandu : 6 prominent Madhesi parties parties have joined hands to form a united force in hope of emboldening a fading Madhes movement and having a greater say in the future of the country’s southern plains. The six parties that have merged into a single party include Madhesi Janadhikar Forum- Ganatantrik, Tarai Madhes Loktantrik Party, Sadbhawana Party, Rastriya Madhes Samajbadi Party, Tarai Madhes Sadbhawana Party, and Nepal Sadbhawana Party.
All the six parties which have their bases in the Madhes region, however, have decided to drop “Madhes” from the party name, in an indication, some say, to send the message across that it does not want to be known as a regional party. The new party also made public its three-colour flag and election symbol (umbrella) today itself. The party has 22 seats in parliament.
During the function, Mahato and chairmen of four other parties jointly unveiled a flag depecting an umbrella as the official flag of the merged entity. Leaders said they are holding negotiations with Anil Jha-led Nepal Sadbhavana Party also to be part of the unification.
