Gaurika Singh wins her heat but fails to enter next round in Rio Olympics
Kathmandu : Nepal’s Gaurika Singh finished first in her heat as she entered the pool in the women’s 100m backstroke event at the Olympics Aquatics Stadium as the youngest athlete in the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics. The youngest athlete in the Rio Olympics finished her race in 1 minute and 8.45 seconds.
Although she beat Evelina Afoa of Samoa and Rita Zeqiri of Kosovo to become first in the first heat, she failed to enter the next round. But she was ranked 31st among 34 swimmers, which meant she was not among the 16 athletes who qualified for the next round.
‘’He’s been texting me and sending me instructions,’’ Singh explained to reporters during a round of interviews with the world’s press. ‘’Before my race I ripped my suit so I had to ask him whether or not I should change it. I was trying to pull it up and my nail went through the suit.’’
Singh came to England at the age of two but discovered after taking up swimming that she was fast enough to represent her native country.During the 12 South Asian Games (SAG) held six months ago in India, Gaurika Singh, clocked 1.731 minutes to set a new national record. She was 1.14 seconds short of breaking her own record this time.
