Kathmandu : Swimmer Gaurika Singh of Nepal is possibly the youngest player to participate in the Rio Olympics 2016, according to various sources.
"That`s quite cool, a bit unreal, too," said Singh, who will be 13 years and 255 days old. It`s not surprising the London-based schoolgirl, who swims for English club Barnet Copthall, is undaunted by the prospect. She has already lived through the 2015 earthquake that devastated Nepal, leaving nearly 9,000 de@d.
According to a Facebook post of Nilendra Raj Shrestha, the convener of Nepal’s Olympics Preparation Committee, he received an email from Ian Chadband, the sports writer of Olympic News Service which states that she could be the youngest athletes among all participants of the Rio Olympics.
She swam the 100m backstroke at the World Championships in Kazan, Russia, last August, and won four medals -- three bronze and one silver -- at the South Asian Games in India in February. She has competed in FINA World Championship in Kazan, Russia and FINA Swimming World Cup in Dubai last year. Gaurika holds 10 national records under her belt.
The Games would begin in Rio of Brazil on August 5 and the Nepali team left for the event on Sunday.
