Kathmandu : Nepal won the semi-final of Bangabandhu Gold cup 2016 and qualified for the final of the tournament. The hero of the match Nawayug Shrestha scored a hat-trick in the match. We have a few interesting facts about the man who took Nepal to a final of any tournament in 17 years.

10. His Birth: Born in Illam, Nawayug is currently 25 years old..

9. His Height: Nawayug is just 5 feet and 6 inches. He is one of the shortest players in current Nepali squad

8. Initial days in Kathmandu: He came to Kathmandu after his SLC. Nawayug tried his luck with ‘C’ division club – Tokha and Himalayan Sherpa which was then in ‘B’ division. He didn’t get much chance then.

7. Initial days: Before coming to Kathmandu, Nawayug was already a recognized player in school level. He played U-14 for his district and played for local Triveni Yuwa Club.

6. Recognition: The Armyman Nawayug plays for Nepal Army Club in the domestic league. With 15 goals, he was the top-scorer in National league in 2068. He scored a hat-trick against Nepal police in the tournament.


5. Entry into the Army: His skills in football was acknowledged during his military training period in Hile, Dhankuta. He was then sent to Itahari to play Army’s Trophy. Immediately after the completion of his military training, he was selected by Tribhuvan Army Club.

3. Nepal National Team: Nawayug Shrestha made his debut in a match against India on August 31, 2015, being replaced for Jagajit Shrestha. The match ended in a goalless draw.


2. His first goal for national Team: Nawayug Shrestha scored the first goal after the shot from Bimal Gharti Magar was deflected from the post. This is his first goal for the national team. Ironically, Bimal scored the goal against Sri Lanka after the shot by Nawayug was deflected from the post.

1. His Hattrick: Nawayug is the fifth Nepali player to score a hat-trick in International football. Earlier, Ganesh Thapa (in 1987), Naresh Joshi (in 1999), Nirajan Rayamajhi (in 2002) and Bharat Khawas (in 2011) scored hat-tricks for Nepal.

More Bonus: Nawayug (नवयुग) in Nepal means ‘a new era’. His hattrick took Nepal to the final of an international Tournament after 17 years. His contribution has probably started a new era in Nepali football.
